2021 - Consultation Report

Further to the letter dated 7th December 2020, please note that the consultation period in respect of the above mentioned proposal closed on Monday 18th January 2021

In accordance with the Welsh Government School Organisation Code, the Authority must now publish a consultation report (at least 2 weeks prior to the publication of statutory notice) which:

Summarises each of the issues raised by consultees;

Responds to these by means of clarification, amendment to the proposal or rejection of the concerns, with supporting reasons;

Sets out Estyn’s response to the consultation in full

2021 - Cabinet approves plans to expand Crownbridge school

This week, Torfaen Council’s Cabinet committee approved to invest £6,850,000 in a 50 place extension to Crownbridge School.

The extension will be completed by December 2023 and 75% of the investment will be funded by Welsh Government and the remainder funded by the council. The funding is part of the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools and Colleges programme.

Crownbridge School is currently oversubscribed with the demand for places expected to increase further. The 50 place extension will be built on the current school site in Croesyceiliog and will help meet the increased demand for special education within the local authority.

Although originally built for 80 pupils, the school currently has 94 pupils and another 21 pupils at Penygarn primary school.

Torfaen’s Executive Member for Education, Cllr Richard Clark said: “The school relocated to its current purpose built accommodation in 2012 for our pupils with severe and profound learning difficulties. The extended facilities for another 50 pupils will give the council the ability to provide places for all foreseeable future applications.

The extension means the council will make savings on external placement than we cannot currently cater for and ensure our learners can have their education within the Borough. We have made plans to ensure disruption to learners on site during construction will be minimised.”

Asbri Planning Ltd. has been commissioned by Tilbury Douglas on behalf of Torfaen CBC to undertake pre-application consultation in respect of Full planning application for the proposed extension to existing school building, relocation of MUGA and associated works at Crownbridge

Funding

The expansion is expected to cost £6.9 million, of which 75 per cent will be funded by the Welsh Government, and 25 per cent by Torfaen County Borough Council.

Current Cost

When students can’t be catered for within the county, some are being sent out to a private provider, which can cost the authority £90,000 a year compared to an in-house cost of £32,000.

Completed

If approved, the project is expected to be completed by December 2023

Savings

The council report says the extra 50 placements would save £2.9 million a year if all places were taken up.

2022 - Granted Permission For Extension

PLANS to add an extension to accommodate extra pupils at a special school that opened 10 years ago have been given the green light.

2023 - 3D Model

EPT Partnership came in to show the whole school what our new build is going to look like.

They showed us around the school in 3D.
We saw how the classrooms are going to look.

2023 - Build Site Time-lapse

The builders spend our summer working hard clearing land to install the first of the foundations and an access road so they can use bigger and heavier machines

They've sent us a time-lapse showing them starting the construction.
