Crownbridge Special School is excited to be developing an innovative international partnership with ORY Laboratory in Japan, a world leader in assistive robotics technology. Through a proposed staff training programme, our team will learn from experts who have pioneered the use of avatar robots to support people with disabilities in education, employment and everyday life.

The project aims to enhance opportunities for our pupils with complex additional learning needs, physical disabilities, communication difficulties and medical needs. Staff will gain specialist knowledge of cutting-edge technologies, including robots that can enable individuals to participate remotely in learning, social activities and workplaces, helping to remove barriers to independence and inclusion.

The learning gained in Japan will be embedded across the school and shared with wider educational partners. This will help develop innovative learning experiences, improve communication and independence, and raise aspirations for future employment and adult life. 

One exciting aspect of the project is the planned development of a school-based Robot Café, alongside opportunities with Celtic Manor Resort, where pupils will be able to gain real-life work experience using assistive technologies. These experiences will support the development of confidence, employability skills and pathways into meaningful employment. 

The partnership will also provide opportunities for international collaboration and cultural exchange. Through virtual links and ongoing cooperation with Japanese partners, pupils will be able to connect with young people from another country, broadening their understanding of different cultures while sharing their own experiences.
